Schoffel's Affinity with the Ptarmigan
15th June 2020 by Schoffel Country
The Schöffel Country that you know today was founded by Corry Cavell-Taylor with the support and experience of father and son Hubert and Peter Schöffel in 1993. It was the Ptarmigan shooting coat that originally launched the brand. The shooting coat was a group effort of some of the most influential shooting retailers at the time; Asprey’s of New Bond Street, James Purdey & Sons, Farlow’s of Pall Mall and Roxton’s of Hungerford. What this group of extraordinarily passionate people created was the ultimate shooting coat.
You may wonder what motivated our Director to create the Ptarmigan shooting coat and it purely came down to his experience in the field. One not so fine shooting day, as Corry stood there, wet through, freezing cold, on the verge of misery he thought, ‘why is it that when I’m skiing I don’t feel the cold, rain or the wind.’ By combining Schöffel innovation with a country aesthetic, the Ptarmigan Coat was born, and it has been keeping people happy in the field since.
But why the Ptarmigan? Ptarmigan’s belong to the Grouse family and they spend their lives up in the Cairngorms, the highest mountains in Scotland. In the winter, it can drop to as low as minus 20°C, and during these colder months Ptarmigans turn white and their plumage thickens to give them the perfect insulation. Their plumage extends down to their feet to prevent heat-loss and to act as snowshoes. In their winter disguise, they conserve warmth and protect themselves from predators by burrowing into snow drifts where they create chambers. They are smart little birds that are kitted out to survive the most extreme winter conditions, it only made sense to name the most technical shooting equipment after them.
To celebrate the Ptarmigan and all it represents, we have embroidered the impressive little bird onto the new St Ives polo shirts. This tonal device on the left side of the chest has the distinctive red ‘eyebrow’ or wattle which stands out against the four colours: Marine, Sage, Pale Pink and Cornflower Blue. Manufactured from the softest organic cotton, the new polos are a must-have for your wardrobe this summer.
